Grubin Captures ITA Small College Championship
Mobile, AL - Sophomore Alex Grubin (Serbia) won the ITA Small College National Singles Tournament for NCAA Division II Tennis October 11-14 at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, Al. Grubin defeated Stephan Borg from Drury U the #1 seed in the tournament and the #2 ranked player in the nation in the 2006-07 season final rankings. He beat Borg 6-1, 6-4. This makes Alex the first male player in Concordia's history to win this event. En route to the finals, Alex defeated William Jacome of Nebraska Kearney University 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 and Henry Estrella from Incarnate Word University 6-1, 6-0.
Grubin advanced to the ITA Suberbowl where the winners of the NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA & Junior College tournaments compete to qualify for a National Division I tournament in November at Ohio State. Grubin beat John Watts, the Division III champion from Washington University 6-2, 6-2. Grubin then lost the finals to Mislav Hizak, the NAIA Champion from Embry Riddle 6-3, 6-4. Hizak's victory was his third championship in three years.
Grubin and his partner Rodrigo Teixeira (Vitoria, Brazil) qualified for the doubles championship as well and were seeded second. The duo won their quarterfinal match against Stephan Borg and Nahom Serekeberhan of Drury University 6-3, 2-6, 7-6. In the semifinals, they lost to Dagoberto Darezzo and Edward Horne of USC-Aiken 7-5, 6-3. In the match for 3rd place they lost to Ryan Hudson and Juan Nunez of Abilene Christian College 6-3, 6-2 to finish 4th.
