Men's Tennis Returns to the NCAA Round of 16
NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Championship Bracket
Easton, MA - For the third straight season, the Concordia College men's tennis team will compete in the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Championship Round of 16, by virtue of their 5-0 sweep of Assumption College today in Easton, MA. It was the 13th consecutive win for Concordia and improves the Clippers record to 18-2 on the season. The Greyhounds suffer their first loss of the season and end with a 17-1 mark on the year.
Concordia swept all three doubles matches to start the day. Junior Rodrigo Teixeira (Vitoria, Brazil) and freshman Alex Grubin (Serbia) defeated Antonio Recalde and Matt Stopp by a score of 8-5 at #1 doubles. Juniors Kirill Azovtsev (St. Petersburg, Russia) and Vlad Malkin (Moscow, Russia) won a narrow 9-7 decision over Jared Dorfman and Dave Marshall. Teixeira and Grubin are ranked 4th in the nation in the east region in doubles competition, while Azovtsev and Malkin are ranked 5th in the east region, as ranked by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The Clippers completed the doubles sweep with an 8-2 win by Josep Molet (Sabadell, Spain) and Henning Ruenz (Muelheim-Kaerlich) against Tom Nowak and Steve Tlumacki at #3 doubles.
In singles play, Azovtsev defeated Marshall 6-4, 6-1 at #4 singles. With just one more win to send the Clippers to the next round, freshman Nik Boerger (Muenster, Germany) topped Tluacki 6-2, 6-3 for the win at #6 singles and gave Concordia the 5-0 victory. The remaining singles flights were not finished, as play ends once one team reaches five wins.
The Clippers are no strangers to the NCAA Men's Tennis Championship Round of 16. This will be the third straight season that Concordia has competed in the Round of 16. Last season, the Clippers season came to an end by the Mustangs of Midwestern State University. Two seasons ago, Concordia fell to the Tritons of UC San Diego in the Round of 16.
The NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Round of 16 will be held in Altamonte Springs, FL on Wednesday, May 9th. The Clippers will square off against the winner of the University of South Carolina-Upstate and Lander University. Those two teams will play each other on Saturday, May 5th at SC-Upstate.
