Concordia Cruises Past Skyhawks 5-0

Easton, MA - Freshman Nik Boerger (Muenster, Germany) won matches in both singles and doubles competition to help the Clippers top the Skyhawks of Stonehill College 5-0 yesterday in the First Round of the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Championships in Easton, MA.

The top seeded Clippers swept through the doubles portion of the match, as Boerger teammed up with senior John Cassas (Bogota, Colombia) to win at #3 doubles 8-1. Junior Rodrigo Teixeira (Vitoria, Brazil) and freshman Alex Grubin (Serbia) earned a victory at #1 doubles over Jason Allegretti and Will Herchel by a score of 8-1. At #2 doubles, sophomore Josep Molet (Sabadell, Spain) and freshman Henning Ruenz (Muelheim-Kaerlich) topped Matt Grabala and Mike Mashkevich 8-4.

 

 

All six singles flights began, with the Clippers needing just two more victories to advance to the next round of the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships. Boerger, playing at #6 singles, defeated Dustin Marshall 6-0, 6-1 and junior Kirill Azovtsev (St. Petersburg, Russia) bested Mike Leone 6-0, 6-1 to claim the victory for the Clippers. The remaining singles matches were not completed, as the match ends once one team reaches five victories.

Concordia, with their 12th straight win, improves to 17-2 on the season. The eighth seeded Skyhawks conclude their 2007 season with a 15-6 record.

The Clippers advance to the Second Round of the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Championships on Friday, May 4th, at Stonehill College. Concordia will meet the Greyhounds of Assumption College (17-0) in a rematch of last season's Second Round match-up. The action gets underway at 11:00 AM with the winner moving on the the NCAA Division II Round of 16 in Altamonte Springs, FL next week.
