Clippers Win Showdown Against Flyers 6-3
Bronxville, NY - In a battle of two of the top teams in the East Region and in the nation, the Concordia College men's tennis team flew past the Mercy College Flyers 6-3 yesterday at the Meyers Tennis Center in Bronxville, NY. The Clippers are the #1 ranked team in the East Region and #18 in the nation, while the Flyers are tied for 3rd in the East Region and #40 in the nation.
Concordia started out be claiming doubles victories at #1 and #2. Junior Rodrigo Teixeira (Vitoria, Brazil) and freshman Alex Grubin (Serbia) topped Vyacheslav Glebov and Yusufcan Koksal 8-4 in #1 doubles. Kirill Azovtsev (St. Petersburg, Russia) and Vlad Malkin (Moscow, Russia) were victorious at #2 doubles by the score of 8-3. The lone loss in doubles came at #3 with Alican Seren and Zeki Tukel defeating John Cassas (Bogota, Colombia) and Nik Boerger (Muenster, Germany) 8-4. The loss was only the second loss for Cassas and Boerger (7-2) together this season.
In singles competition, Josep Molet (Sabadell, Spain) upset the #33 ranked player in the nation, Vyacheslav Glebov, 6-2, 4-6 and 6-2 at #2 singles. Grubin continues his impressive freshman campaign with a straight set 6-4, 6-0 win over Koksal at #1 singles. The Clippers clinched the win with wins at #3 and #5 singles. Malkin defeated Carlos Ferreira 6-1, 7-5 at #5 singles and Teixeira came back in the third set to top Seren 6-3, 4-6 and 6-4.
The Clippers improve their record to 8-2 overall and 2-0 in the East Coast Conference. Mercy College falls to 4-2 overall and 0-1 in the East Coast Conference.
The Clippers will look to make it 4 straight wins on Wednesday,
April 4th, as they host the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College.
