Clippers Climb Rankings to 18th
Bronxville, NY - With the latest Division II Men's Tennis Rankings released this past weekend, the Concordia College men's tennis team jumped 14 spots to 18th in the nation, as released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Concordia also remains the #1 ranked team in the East Region, a spot that has been held since April 2005. This is the highest national ranking that the Clippers have achieved since becoming a member of the NCAA Division II.
Concordia concluded the fall semester ranked 32nd in the country. The Clippers defeated Division I Fordham University 5-1 back in September. The Clippers were able to take 5 of the 6 singles flights, falling only in 6th singles. None of the doubles matches were played, with the Clippers already clinching the victory.
Concordia started off the spring semester on February 9th with a heartbreaking 5-4 loss to another Division I opponent, the Bearcats of Binghamton University. The Clippers started out of the gate strong with 2 wins in the doubles portion of the match. However, Binghamton would regroup to win 4 of the 6 singles flights to claim the 5-4 win.
In the East Coast Conference Singles & Doubles Tournament held at Queens College on February 24th-25th, Concordia won 4 out of the 9 flights. Rodrigo Teixeira (Vitoria, Brazil) and Henning Ruenz (Muelheim-Kaerlich) won at #2 doubles and Nik Boerger (Muenster, Germany) and John Cassas (Bogota, Columbia) prevailed at #3 doubles. Teixeira and Cassas also claimed singles titles at #2 and #6, respectively.
Concordia then headed to Florida for Spring Break for 4 matches. The Clippers opened with a signature 5-4 victory over then #17 Rollins College on March 5th. Concordia then followed that up with convincing 9-0 wins over Averett University and Flagler College. It was the first wins for Concordia over Rollins College and Flagler College. "Defeating nationally ranked Rollins College was our best win thus far this season" says Head Coach Neil Tarangioli. "Never in my wildest imagination did I think we could have defeated Flagler College 9-0" added Tarangioli.
The Clippers are currently 7-2 on the season. In singles competition, Concordia has a cumulative record of 46-16. Cassas is 6-0 in singles contests. Ruenz is undefeated in both singles (5-0) and doubles (5-0) matches. Teixeira is 9-2 in doubles play and Boerger is 9-1 in doubles competition.
The Clippers will be looking for a return trip to the Round of 16 in the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Tournament. Concordia was defeated by the Indians of Midwestern State 5-2 in last seasons NCAA Tournament. "Anything short of winning our conference tournament and qualifying for the NCAA Regionals would be a disappointment" say Tarangioli. "We would like to get back to the Round of 16 and advance further into the NCAA Tournament this season" states the Head Coach. Assistant Coach Daniel Rockhill declares "This may be our best and deepest team in the history of this program. We have 10 guys that we can count on every match." Rockhill played men's tennis for the Clippers and was ranked 10th nationally in doubles play. Rockhill adds, "Our success starts at the top with the support of our administration, our head coach and the efforts of our hard working players."
The Clippers will be back in action on Saturday, March 31, as
they host the Flyers of Mercy College at the Meyers Tennis Center.
First serve is set for 11:00 AM.
