Clippers Edge Queens and Mercy as Pre-Season Favorite
Harrison, NY, January 17, 2007 - Defending conference tournament champion, Concordia College, has been selected to win the East Coast Conference men's tennis title in 2007, according to the preseason poll of the league's coaches. Concordia (31 points) edged second place Queens College (30 points) by one point and third place Mercy College (29 points) by two points. Concordia, Queens and Mercy shared the 2006 regular season men's tennis crown before Concordia went on capture the conference championship tournament. All three teams each received two first place votes from the league's six head men's tennis coaches.
Queens' senior Wojciech Stuchlik (Psczyna,
Poland) is the coaches' preseason selection for Conference Player
of the Year honors. Stuchlik earned 2006 conference Player of
the Year honors, and he won this Fall's ITA Eastern Regional
singles' title. Joining Stuchlik on the
pre-season All-Conference Team are freshman Nik Boerger (Muenster,
Germany) of Concordia; sophomore Vyacheslav
Glebov (Kransnoyarsk, Russia) of Mercy; senior
Gustavo Sanchez (Valencia, Venezuela) of
Dowling; junior Rodrigo Teixeira
(Vitoria, Brazil) of Concordia and senior
Andrey Vasiliev (Novosibirsk, Russia) of Queens.
"ECC men's tennis is one of our most competitive sports," said Ed Manetta, East Coast Conference Commissioner. "We expect to see a great race for the league title this season and continued success for our teams on the regional and national levels."
The 2007 East Coast Conference Men's Tennis Flight Tournament will take place on Saturday and Sunday, February 24-25 at Queens College, and this year's East Coast Conference Men's Tennis Team Championship Tournament, which is a four-team affair, will be held on Thursday and Friday, April 19-20 with the higher seed teams hosting matches on both days.
