Dimitrov Tallies Four Goals in 6-1 Win
Bronxville, NY - The Concordia College men's soccer team rode a four goal performance by senior Stefan Dimitrov (Bulgaria) to defeat the Pioneers of Columbia Union College 6-1 yesterday at Holtdorf Soccer Field in Bronxville, NY.
The Clippers would get on the scoreboard first in the 12th minute on Dimitrov's first goal of the game. Junior Samuel Ortega (Bucaramanga, Columbia) assisted on the goal. The Pioneers would score their only goal of the game on an unassisted goal from Gary Saint-Fleur in the 26th minute to tie the game at 1-1.
Concordia would answer just minutes later, as the Pioneers were whistled for a foul in the penalty area. On the ensuing penalty kick, Dimitrov fired the ball past a diving Pioneer goalkeeper to put the Clippers ahead 2-1. Concordia would tack on two more goals before the half, as Dimitrov scored goal number three on a pass from freshman Richard Heredia (Patchogue, NY) and freshman Daniel Espinoza (New Rochelle, NY) scored a goal in the 37th minute of play to give Concordia a 4-1 lead at the break.
In the second half, Dimitrov concluded his scoring for the day with his fourth goal, again receiving an assist from Ortega in the 67th minute. Ortega would put the final goal in the back of the net for Concordia to make the final score 6-1 in the 81st minute.
The Clippers out shot the Pioneers 16-7, with 12 shots coming in the first half of play.
Freshman Anthony McCarthy (Northport, NY) picked up the win for Concordia, lasting the full 90 minutes and finishing with 5 saves on the day. Johnathan Uribe allowed 6 goals and finished with 7 saves for Columbia Union.
The Clippers improve to 3-1 on the season. The Pioneers suffer their first loss of the year and fall to 1-1 overall.
Concordia will travel to Philadelphia, PA on Wednesday, September 10th to take on the Tigers of Holy Family University in non-conference play. The game will begin at 4:00 PM.
