Clippers rewrite school record book; finish 3rd at Wilmington
The Concordia College golf team played in the one-day, 36-hole Wilmington University Spring Classic on April 2 at Frog Hollow GC in Middletown, DE. The Clippers were led by freshmen Lorenz Kolmeder (Bavaria, GER), who turned in rounds of 73-72 -- 145, good for a tie for sixth place in the 39-player field. Fellow freshman Sam Deitte (St. Louis, MO) carded a two-round total of 72-74 -- 146, landing him in a tie for 9th place.
Kyle Grandilli (Ontario, CAN) shot rounds of 79-70 --
149 and finished in a tie for 13th place. His one-under
par round of 70 was the first sub-par round in school history and
established a
new school standard for a round by an individual. Grandilli's tie
for 9th place represents his sixth Top Ten finish in nine
tournaments.
Sophomore Jeff Schaller (Kingston, NY), whose two-round total of 75-76 -- 151 was good enough to tie for 20th place, has finished in the Top 20 at all nine Concordia tournaments this year.
As a team, host Wilmington University shot 4-under par (284-280 -- 564) to win the 36-hole event. Rounding out the Top Five were Bucknell University (290-292 -- 582), Concordia College (299-292 -- 591), California University-PA. (305-290 -- 595) and Swarthmore College (307-303 -- 610).
Sophomore Will Deitte (St. Louis, MO) shot 81-86 -- 167 to finish in a tie for 31st place.
The two rounds by the Clippers broke and then improved on the previous school mark of 301.
Concordia upped its record to 23-16 in the East region head-to-head standings and improved to 13-3 in the CACC head-to-head standings. The Clippers are 1-3 against Division I competition this year.
"The team continues to practice great, late into the day, and under any conditions," commented coach Scott Allen. "After the practice round on Friday, they seemed very comfortable with the course. I am really proud of them and even happier for them. Their team camaraderie is the foundation to their success. We're a young team but I've learned not to place boundaries on their potential. I can tell the students are very excited about the rest of the season."
