Concordia Completes Second Half Comeback to Win 76-73 over Dominican
Bronxville, NY – The Concordia College Clippers men's basketball team hosted Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) rival Dominican College this evening. After losing the past three games against the Chargers, Concordia completed a second half comeback to win 76-73.
After suffering a loss to Dominican back in December, the Clippers came into the game ready to avenge the defeat. Both teams came out ready to score but it wasn't until six minutes had passed that a lead would be built. The Chargers went on a 10-2 run to take a 22-14 lead with 13:11 to go in the half. Concordia responded with a 9-0 run minutes later to tie the game at 26-26. The Clippers went cold during the final six minutes of the period as Dominican took advantage and went into the locker room with a 41-32 lead.
A layup to begin the half by the Chargers gave them their largest lead of the game at 11. Concordia was unable to chip away at their deficit and Dominican held onto a double digit lead until 13:26 was left on the clock. The Clippers then went on a 10-0 run over the next four minutes to tie the game at 57-57.
Concordia and the Chargers both spent the last nine minutes in a heated battle. The largest lead for either team in the closing minutes was only three points as neither team was going to give up. After two free throws by Norman Pope (Washington, D.C.), the Clippers took a 71-70 lead with 2:19 left.
Dominican split a pair of free throws in their next possession as Concordia responded with a three-point basket by Dominique Spann (West Babylon, NY) to take a three point lead. With under a minute to play the Chargers made a layup to get within one point. The Clippers missed their next shot as Dominican had the ball with less than 30 seconds to play.
Solid defense by Concordia caused a turnover by the Chargers and Kyle Kube (West Babylon, NY) came up with the steal. Kube was then fouled and sent to the foul line with 13 seconds to go as he calmly converted both free throws to give the Clippers a three point lead.
Dominican needed a three-point basket to tie the game and send it into overtime. They got two looks including a shot at the buzzer but Concordia was able to come away with their eighth win of the season.
Pope led the Clippers with a game-high 23 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field while also adding four assists, two rebounds and a steal. Spann and Jahrod Lide (Bronx, NY) both added 12 points in the victory. As a team, Concordia shot 41.9% (26-of-62) from the field as well as shooting 17-of-23 (73.9%) from the foul line.
The Clippers (8-9, 5-4 CACC) will look to continue with their success as they visit conference opponent Wilmington (DE) on Saturday. Tip-off at Pratt Gymnasium in New Castle, DE is set for 3pm following the women's game.
