Clippers Lose Close One to Bloomfield, 79-73
Bloomfield, NJ – The Concordia College Clippers men's basketball team traveled to face last year's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) champion, the Bloomfield Deacons. In a close battle, the Clippers were edged 79-73 as Bloomfield won for the 13th time this season.
Concordia began the game ready to show the Deacons they are serious contenders for the number one seed in the CACC North Division. The Clippers began the game scoring three straight baskets as they took an early 8-6 lead. Bloomfield would retake the lead until Jason Alleyne (Bronx, NY) sank a three-point shot to tie the game at 14-14 with 13:32 to go in the half.
Neither team could gain a substantial lead as the game remained exciting for the fans at Bloomfield Gymnasium. Following a free throw by the Deacons with 8:26 to go in the half, both teams went ice cold on their shooting. Concordia only managed to score six more points in the half while Bloomfield only scored three points as the teams went into the locker room tied at 33-33.
Early in the second half, both teams found their rhythm again and the scoreboard still remained close. When the Deacons scored three or four points in a row the Clippers would do the same. Following a foul shot by Norman Pope (Washington, D.C.), Bloomfield opened up a seven point lead with just over nine minutes to play.
The lead then increased to 11 points with 5:05 to go as it looked like the Deacons were going to put the game away. Concordia was not ready to surrender as they began to chip away at the deficit. After Argelix Gil (Brooklyn, NY) hit both his free throws, the Clippers were only down by five points with 1:23 remaining.
Following a three point play by Bloomfield, Concordia made back-to-back shots to get within four with 42 seconds left. A quick foul allowed the Deacons to convert on both free throws and the next possession for the Clippers resulted in a three-point basket as they were now within three points of the lead.
Concordia fouled right away again and this time Bloomfield only made one of two free throws. A turnover by the Clippers resulted in a layup for the Deacons and gave them a 6 points lead. With time running out Concordia had to look for a three point basket to have a chance at tying the game. Nothing would fall for the Clippers as Bloomfield held on to the six point victory.
Gil led Concordia with a game-high 28 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field while also adding a game-high 18 rebounds. Gil also added two assists and two steals while Alleyne added 18 points and Pope finished with 15 points. As a team, the Clippers shot 31.5% (23-of-73) from the field as well as shooting 21-of-25 (84.0%) from the foul line.
Concordia (7-9, 4-4 CACC) will look ahead to their next game which will be on Wednesday, January 18th. The Clippers will host Dominican College at the Meyer Athletic Center on the campus of Concordia College. Tip-off is set for 7pm following the conclusion of the women's game.
