Concordia Men’s Basketball Announces 2011 Recruiting Class

As the Spring National Signing Period is coming to a close, Concordia College’s Men’s Basketball Coach Brian Sondey has announced the signing of four student-athletes for the 2011-2012 season.  “I am extremely excited about this class we have coming in,” Coach Sondey stated.  “These four young men are such versatile players with room to really improve.  I feel that as they grow together over the next four years they will have an opportunity to do some amazing things,”  Sondey continued.

The four players who have agreed to attend Concordia are; 6’9” power forward/center Mohamed Abass of Xaverian High School, 6’5” forward Daniel Healy Jr. of Kennedy Catholic High School, 6’6” shooting guard Tshyrad Oates of The Robinson School, and 6’4” shooting guard/forward Dominique Spann of The St. Thomas More School.  “If you look at the foundation of it all, these players all came from winning programs,” stated Coach Sondey.  “I am certain they will bring a winning attitude to the Clipper program.”

Mohamed Abass will be counted on as a big man in the middle for the Clippers next season.  A native of Brooklyn, NY Mohamed has an opportunity to be a defensive presence right away.  “With Mohamed I really came away impressed with his ability to compete with our big men at his workout,” said Coach Sondey.  “He challenged at the rim defensively, and looked to attack on the offensive end.  There is definitely a fire there that we are looking to spark.”  Mohamed played under Coaches Alesi and Spelman at Xaverian in the very competitive Brooklyn/Queens CHSAA “AA” Division.

Daniel Healy Jr. is a combo forward who can use his size to post smaller wings, or step out against bigger defenders.  A native of Yorktown, NY Dan impressed with his high basketball IQ and toughness.  “Any time I saw Daniel during the season I noticed he was never afraid in the biggest of situations,” said Coach Sondey.  “He’s got great touch for a kid his size, and can step out to the 3 Point Line.  We are very excited to watch him get physically stronger once he gets on campus and to learn to contribute at a bunch of different positions for us.”  Daniel played under Coaches Kelly and Caputi at Kennedy in the Class “A” Division of Section 1 (Westchester County, NY).

Tshyrad Oates is an explosive wing who shows a knack of attacking the offensive glass, and being able to use his athleticism.  A native of Union City, NJ, Tshyrad was quickly noticed because of his explosiveness.  “Tshyrad shines in situations where he can use his athletic ability,” noted Coach Sondey.  “I think the sky is the limit once we get him in our transition offense and running with our guards.  Tshyrad’s next step will be to develop his jumper so we can play him in different screen roll situations as well.”  Tshyrad played under Coach Robinson at The Robinson School playing against the top prep schools in the nation.

Dominique Spann also will add great athleticism to The Clippers.  A native of West Babylon, NY,  Dominique is a combo Guard/Forward who Coach Sondey feels will be great in transition but also be able to guard different positions defensively.  “When I saw Dom I was excited by his jumping ability and willingness to finish every play strong, but what really excited me was the potential of him being a nightmare on defense for opposing wings,” said Coach Sondey.  “Coming from such a competitive Prep situation I expect a certain maturity level from Dom every day in practice even as a freshman,” Sondey continued.  Dominique played under Coach Quinn at nationally acclaimed St. Thomas More Prep in Oakdale, Connecticut.

“This is a great time to be a part of our program,” Coach Sondey said.  “These young men are joining a great returning cast.  I cannot wait for next season to get here with this fine team we have put together,” Sondey concluded.
