Concordia Defeats Bears 85-76

Old Westbury, NY - The Concordia College men's basketball team shot a season's best 50% from the floor, including 58% in the second half to defeat NYIT 85-76 last night in Old Westbury, NY.  The Clippers pick-up their first win of the season to improve to 1-3 overall and 1-0 in the East Coast Conference. The Bears fall to 4-3 on the year and 0-1 in ECC play.

Concordia was led by sophomore Samuel Batista (Carolina, Puerto Rico), who finished with 19 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 blocks. Junior Troy Young (Largo, MD) scored 15 points and went a perfect 3 for 3 from behind the 3-point arc.

Both teams battled back and forth in the second half, with neither team leading by more than 4 points for the fist ten minutes of the second half. A lay-up by senior Dan Cunningham (Ulster Park, NY) gave the Clippers the lead for good at 63-62. Cunningham finished the game with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

A pair of free throws by Daniel Berg of NYIT made the score 68-67 with the Clippers ahead by a point. Batista hit a 3-pointer to spark a 12-0 scoring run to give Concordia an 80-67 lead with only 40 seconds remaining.

Sophomore William Eason (Springfield, MA) added 14 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists, while junior Kenny Gaskins (Bronx, NY) chipped in 11 points and 4 rebounds.

For NYIT, Mickell Vickers paced the team with 22 points and pulled down 5 rebounds. Bryant Lassiter added 11 points, 9 assists and 5 rebounds. Benny Flores and Daniel Cox chipped in 9 points and 8 points, respectively.

Concordia will try to remain perfect in ECC play as they host the Molloy College Lions on Saturday, December 6th at the Meyer Athletic Center. The game will begin at 3:00 PM.
