Golden Knights Edge Clippers 64-63
Albany, NY - The Concordia College men's basketball team was defeated by the Golden Knights of Saint Rose 64-63 last night at Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium in Albany, NY. The Clippers drop their third game of the season to fall to 0-3 overall. Saint Rose improves to 2-2 on the year.
The Clippers were led by junior Samuel Batista (Carolina, Puerto Rico), who collected 16 points and 3 rebounds. Sophomore William Eason (Springfield, MA) posted his first double-double of the year with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Eason shot an efficient 5 for 8 (63%) from the floor and also added a game high 5 assists. Junior Troy Young (Largo, MD) contributed 13 points for the Clippers and freshman Daniel Olsen (Stafford, CT) chipped in 8 points and 6 rebounds.
The game was close throughout, as neither team led by more than 8 points during the 40 minute span. Concordia led 28-20 with 5:46 left in the first half on a lay-up by Young. However, the Golden Knights would respond with a 13-4 scoring run to take a 33-32 lead with over a minute remaining. Both teams traded baskets the rest of the way and the Clippers went into the locker room ahead 37-36. Both teams shot over 50% in the first half.
Late in the second half with the Clippers leading 61-59, Shea Bromirski nailed a 3-pointer to give Saint Rose a 62-61 lead. Bromirski would add a pair of free throws to increase the lead to 64-61 with 1:14 left. Sophomore Sean Walker (Bridgeport, CT) scored a basket 12 seconds later to make it a 1-point deficit. The Clippers defense rose to the occasion to force a shot clock violation and gave Concordia a chance to win the game. However, Walker's 3-point shot with :04 seconds left was off-mark, allowing the Golden Knights to secure the win.
Bromirski finished with a game high 23 points for Saint Rose on 6 for 11 (55%) shooting from the floor. Bromirski was also 3 for 5 (60%) from 3-point range anda perfect 8 for 8 from the free throw line. Evan Lane added 10 points and 6 rebounds while Brian Hanuschak chipped in 9 points and 5 rebounds.
Concordia will begin East Coast Conference action on Wednesday, December 3rd, as they travel to Old Westbury, NY to take on the Bears of the New York Institute of Technology. Tip-off is set for 7:15 PM.
