Clippers Fall at Adelphi Tip-Off Classic

Garden City, NY - The Concordia College men's basketball team lost both contests at the Adelphi University Tip-Off Classic this past weekend in Garden City, NY.
The Clippers opened with an 85-68 loss to the Chargers of Dominican College on Saturday. Concordia was led by junior Kenny Gaskins (Bronx, NY), who scored 16 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Sophomore Samuel Batista (Carolina, Puerto Rico) finished with 14 points and 7 rebounds, while freshman Jetmir Shala (Yorktown Heights, NY) added 10 points and 8 rebounds. Senior Dan Cunningham (Ulster Park, NY) led Concordia with 10 rebounds and sophomore Nikko Callender (Baldwin, NY) had a game high 6 assists for the Clippers.
For the Chargers, Will Carty collected a game high 21 points and pulled down 9 rebounds. Carty shot 5 for 7 (71%) from 3-point range for the game. Brandon Brock had 13 points and Zach Huston finished with 12 points and 8 rebounds.
On the second day of the tournament, the Clippers fell to the Post University Eagles 72-60. The Clippers trailed 35-34 at halftime. Both teams traded baskets, as neither team led by more than 6 points through most of the second half. Batista hit a jumper to tie the game 58-58 with 5:14 remaining. However, the Chargers defense clamped down and held Concordia scoreless over the next 4:59 to take a 70-58 lead with :15 second left in the game. Sophomore Sean Walker (Bridgeport, CT) and freshman Daniel Olsen (Stafford, CT) each scored 12 points for the Clippers. Batista finished with 10 points and Cunningham added 8 points and 8 rebounds.
For Post University, Omar Robinson and Jesse Iyalekhue each poured in 16 points. Iyalekhue also secured a game high 10 rebounds for the Eagles. Cecil Stinson added 14 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists, while Garvin McAlister chipped in 10 points.
The Clippers fall to 0-2 on the year. Concordia will be back in action on Monday, November 24th, as they travel to Albany, NY to face the Golden Knights of Saint Rose College in a non-conference game. The action begins at 7:30 PM.
