Last Second Foul Shot Lifts Bears Past Clippers 57-56
Bronxville, NY - Senior Dan Cunningham (Ulster Park, NY) scored a game high 16 points and pulled down 8 rebounds in a 57-56 loss to the Bears of the New York Institute of Technology yesterday at the Meyer Athletic Center in Bronxville, NY. The Clippers suffer their 4th straight loss and fall to 5-16 on the season and 3-7 in the East Coast Conference. NYIT improves to 11-8 overall and 6-4 in the East Coast Conference.
Freshman Daniel Olsen (Stafford, CT) turned in a solid performance with 9 points and a game high 11 rebounds. Senior Alphonso DuHart (Hillside, NJ) and sophomore Sean Walker (Bridgeport, CT) added 9 points and 7 points, respectively.
For the Bears, Benny Flores had a team high 12 points, while Bryant Lassiter and Arthur Braswell finished with 11 points each. Anthony Clarke chipped in 6 points.
DuHart connected on the first basket of the second half to give Concordia a 1 point lead. The Clippers would push the advantage to 11 points on a lay-up by Olsen with 13:11 left to play.
The Bears would fight back and tie the game at 50-50 on a shot by Braswell. Both teams would trade points over the next several minutes. With the score again tied at 54-54, Cunningham hit his third basket in a row to give the Clippers a 2-point advantage with under a minute to play. A foul by sophomore William Eason (Springfield, MA) put Clarke on the foul line, where he would connect on both shots to tie the game at 56-56.
The Clippers would get another shot, but Cunningham was unable to connect on a basket and fouled Braswell with 2 seconds in the game. Braswell would hit the first free throw for the game winner.
The Clippers shot 45.8% (22 for 48) for the game compared to the Bears 30.6% (15 for 49). Concordia could only connect on 50% (8 for 16) of their free throws for the game, while NYIT was 20 for 31 (64.5%) from the foul line.
The Clippers will return to action on Wednesday, February 4th, as they travel to Rockville Centre, NY to face-off with the Lions of Molloy College. The Lions defeated the Clippers 64-62 in overtime back on December 6th at the Meyer Athletic Center. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 PM.
