Men's Basketball Defeats NYIT 67-62
Old Westbury, NY - Senior Richard Fields (Bronx, NY) scored a game high 25 points to lead the Clippers past the Bears of NYIT 67-62 last night in the East Coast Conference Quarter-Finals in Old Westbury, NY. Fields also contributed 5 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals. Junior Troy Young (Largo, MD) came off the bench to score 13 points and grab 4 rebounds in just 18 minutes of action. Sophomore Kenny Gaskins III (Bronx, NY) added 12 points and 4 rebounds, while freshman William Eason (Springfield, MA) chipped in 10 points and a game high 9 rebounds. The Clippers came into the ECC Tournament as the #6 seed.
For NYIT, who entered the ECC Tournament as the #3 seed, Miguel Pierre Fanfan led the charge with 19 points and 7 rebounds. Bryant Lassiter added 13 points and Phillip Jones and Truman Montgomery each chipped in 8 points.
With the score tied 4-4 in the early going, the Bears jumped out to an 11-4 lead to take control of the game. The Bears would increase the lead to 26-10 with 09:38 remaining in the half. Gaskins sank two free throws to cut the deficit to 31-24, however, that would be as close as the Clippers would get in the opening half. The Bears went into the locker room with a 38-29 lead on the strength of 58.3% (14-24) shooting, including 50% (6-12) shooting from 3-point range.
In the second half, Pierre Fanfan nailed two free throws to give NYIT a 57-50 lead. Concordia would then go on a 9-1 scoring run to take a 59-58 lead with just over 5 minutes left in the game. Pierre Fanfan made a basket to give the lead back to the Bears at 60-59. Freshman Dustin Priest (Kingston, NY) sank a huge 3-pointer to give the Clippers the lead for good with 03:52 left in the game. The Bears went cold down the stretch and could only manage two free throws in the final 03:26 of the game. NYIT shot 7-26 (26.9%) in the second half compared to the Clippers 44.8% (13-29). From 3-point range, the Clippers shot 5-7 (71.4%) in the second half compared to the Bears 0-10.
The Clippers improve to 12-16 overall on the season. The Bears end their season at 16-12.
Concordia will travel to Flushing, NY and play in the East Coast
Conference Semi-Finals held at Queens College. The Clippers will
take on the #2 seed Panthers of Adelphi University in the second
semi-final of the day. The first game will feature the #1 seed C.W.
Post Pioneers battling the #4 seed Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas
College. In two regular season meetings this season with
Adelphi, each team won a closely contested contest on
their respective home courts. The Clippers edged the Panthers 63-57
back on February 2nd at the Meyer Athletic Center in the last
meeting. Tip-off is set for 7:30 PM.
