Fields Scores Career High 37 Points in Clippers 78-72 Victory
Bronxville, NY - Senior Richard Fields (Bronx, NY) had his best offensive output as a Clipper, scoring 37 points in leading Concordia to a 78-72 win over the Bears of the New York Institute of Technology yesterday at the Meyer Athletic Center in Bronxville, NY. Fields had an efficient shooting night, going 11-20 (55%) from the floor, including 4-10 (40%) from 3-point range. Fields was also 85% (11-13) from the free throw line and added 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. Junior Dan Cunningham (Kingston, NY) finished with 11 points and 5 rebounds and sophomore Torrance McGill (Manhattan, NY) scored 9 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Troy Young (Largo, MD) and Kenny Gaskins III (Bronx, NY) chipped in 6 points and 5 points, respectively for the Clippers.
For the Bears, Bryant Lassiter finished with 28 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. Kirk Stewart chipped in 12 points and Miguel Pierre Fanfan added 9 points and 8 rebounds.
The Clippers raced out to an 18-7 lead, with Fields scoring 8 of those points for Concordia. The showdown between 2 of the top 5 scorers in the conference wouldn't disappoint the crowd, as Fields scored 21 points in the first half and Lassiter finished with 15 points in the opening half.
The second half opened with Concordia going on a 10-4 scoring run to give them the biggest lead of the second half, a 49-39 lead with 16:34 left in the game. NYIT would battle back and cut the Clipper lead to 67-66 on a 3-pointer by Truman Montgomery with 02:59 remaining. Concordia would connect on three straight baskets to push the lead back up to 73-66 with just over a minute to play. On two occasions, the Bears would cut the deficit to just 3 points, but the Clippers connected on 5 of 6 free throws in the final minute to preserve the win.
Concordia improves to 10-14 overall and 9-8 in the East Coast Conference. The Clippers now sit alone in the 4th spot in the upcoming East Coast Conference Tournament with 3 games remaining in the regular season. The Bears fall to 14-9 overall and 11-5 in the East Coast Conference.
The Clippers will travel to Rockville Centre, NY on Wednesday,
February 20th to face the Lions of Molloy College. Earlier this
season, the Lions escaped the Meyer Athletic Center with a 73-72
win over the Clippers. The action is set to begin at 7:30 PM.
