Clippers Soar Past Eagles 78-72
Bridgeport, CT - Senior Richard Fields (Bronx, NY) scored a game high 28 points to lead Concordia over the Eagles of Post University 78-72 last night at the ECAC-UB Holiday Classic held at the University of Bridgeport in Bridgeport, CT. Concordia improves to 4-4 on the season.
Fields shot 50% (7-14) from the floor and 81% (13-16) from the free throw line. The senior also finished with 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. Sophomore Kenny Gaskins III (Bronx, NY) finished with a season high 15 points on 6-7 (86%) shooting for the game and dished out 4 assists. Freshman Sean Walker (Bridgeport, CT) added 13 points, 3 rebounds and 2 steals and senior Lamont Wilson (Manhattan, NY) chipped in 7 points and 3 rebounds.
For the Eagles, Peter Lawal finished with a double-double, scoring 21 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. AJ Reitter contributed 17 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocks and Omar Robinson added 13 points and 3 rebounds. Post University drops to 4-4 on the season.
The first half was a close battle, as neither team led by more than 5 points for the opening 15 minutes of play. Freshman Dustin Priest (Kingston, NY) sank two free throws to cut Clipper deficit to 27-24 with 05:19 remaining. Lawal connected on 4 consecutive free throws to spark a 12-3 Eagle scoring run, giving Post their largest lead at 39-27 with 01:35 remaining on the clock. Lawal would score 10 of the 12 Eagle points in that span. Concordia would respond with Fields netting the final 7 points of the half to cut the Eagle lead to 39-34 at the half.
A lay-up by Walker gave the Clippers their first lead of the second half at 40-39. Post would fight back and take a 57-50 lead with 09:42 left in the game. A Gaskins III lay-up tied the score at 63-63, followed by a 3-pointer by Fields that gave the Clippers the lead for good. Concordia would ice the game at the free throw line, swishing 8 of 11 free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
The Clippers will continue at the ECAC-UB Holiday Classic on Wednesday, December 19th, as they take on the Hawks of Saint Anselm College. The Hawks defeated fellow ECC member Bridgeport 75-71 in the tournaments opening game. The Clippers and Hawks will tip-off at 5:00 PM.
