Clippers Nip Golden Lions 65-63
Oakdale, NY - Senior Richard Fields (Bronx, NY) finished with a game high 22 points, pulled down 4 rebounds and had 5 steals as the Clippers edged the Golden Lions of Dowling College 65-63 last night at St. Johns Eastern Long Island Campus in Oakdale, NY.
Fields shot a season's best 60% (9-15) from the floor in helping the Clippers to their best shooting performance of the season at 50% (27-54). Senior Lamont Wilson (Manhattan, NY) came close to a double-double, finishing with 14 points and 9 rebounds. Wilson also had a great shooting night, shooting 78% (7-9) from the floor. Sophomore Kenny Gaskins III (Bronx, NY) finished with 9 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals for the Clippers and freshman Sean Walker (Bridgeport, CT) chipped in 7 points and 2 rebounds.
The Golden Lions had a balanced offensive attack, as 4 players scored in double figures. James St. Roberts led the way with 15 points and Mike Hill had 13 points. David Seagers finished with 11 points and Leonard Lans chipped in 10 points for the Golden Lions. All four players pulled down 7 rebounds apiece.
The Golden Lions had an early 8-7 lead until a lay-up by Gaskins III gave the Clippers a 9-8 lead, a lead that Concordia would not relinquish. The Clippers led by 10 points on a lay-up by junior Dan Cunningham (Kingston, NY) with 09:57 remaining in the opening half. Dowling would chip away and cut the Clipper lead to 22-20 on a jumper by Ryan Lobban. Both teams would exchange baskets the rest on the first half, with the Clippers taking a 34-30 lead into the locker room.
Concordia opened up a 10 point lead in the second half with 14:14 remaining. Dowling would cut the Clipper lead to 64-63 with a 3-pointer by Lobban with 01:28 left in the game. The Golden Lions had a chance to take the lead, but Seagers jumper with 00:18 seconds left was off the mark. Gaskins III swished one of two free throws for the games final point.
The win improves the Clippers overall record to 3-4 and puts the Clippers above .500 in the East Coast Conference at 3-2. Dowling College falls to 0-8 overall and 0-5 in the East Coast Conference.
Concordia will next travel to Bridgeport, CT on Tuesday, December 18th to participate in the ECAC-University of Bridgeport Holiday Classic Tournament. The Clippers will take on the Eagles of Post University at 7:00 PM on Tuesday and will face the Saint Anselm College Hawks on Wednesday at 5:00 PM.
