Clippers Defeat Chargers 73-69 for Third Straight Win
West Haven, CT - Junior Dan Cunningham (Kingston, NY) scored a team high 16 points and grabbed 8 rebounds to lead the Clippers to a 73-69 win over the University of New Haven Chargers today at Charger Gymnasium in West Haven, CT. Cunningham shot an impressive 8-11 (73%) from the floor for the Clippers. Senior Richard Fields (Bronx, NY) finished the game with 11 points, 6 rebounds and a season high 9 assists. Junior Alban Shala (Yorktown Heights, NY) also netted 11 points for the Clippers and senior Lamont Wilson (Manhattan, NY) added 10 points and 5 rebounds.
For New Haven, Tetrick Stonar scored a game high 18 points and Cassius Chaney finished with a double-double, scoring 17 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Darryl Greene and D.J. Sackmann scored 15 points and 7 points, respectively.
The Clippers took a 13-11 lead on a lay-up by Cunningham midway through the first half and would not relinquish the lead the rest of the game. Concordia would lead by as many as 9 points with just over 15 minutes remaining in the game. New Haven would cut their deficit to 68-66 on a 3-pointer by Stonar with 01:47 left to play. Wilson converted on a traditional 3-point play with 38 seconds left to give Concordia a 71-66 advantage. Greene would answer right back with his own traditional 3-point play, again cutting the Clipper lead to 2 points at 71-69. The Chargers had a chance to tie the game, but, Chaney's shot was off the mark with 12 seconds left. Fields connected on 2 foul shots to ice the game with 6 second left to play.
The win improves the Clippers record to 7-11 overall and 6-5 in the East Coast Conference. New Haven falls to 8-9 overall and 4-6 in the East Coast Conference.
The Clippers will look to keep the momentum rolling as they travel to Sparkill, NY on Wednesday, January 30th to face the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College. The Clippers beat the Spartans 68-51 at the Meyer Athletic Center back on December 1, 2007. The action is set to begin at 7:30 PM.
