Men's Basketball Tops Bridgeport 59-47

Bronxville, NY - Senior Richard Fields (Bronx, NY) scored a game high 19 points to help the Clippers beat the Purple Knights of the University of Bridgeport 59-47 last night at the Meyer Athletic Center in Bronxville, NY. The win stops a 7-game losing skid for the Clippers. Senior Lamont Wilson (Manhattan, NY) finished with his first double-double of the season, scoring 10 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Wilson shot 60% (3-5) from the floor and a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line. Junior Troy Young (Largo, MD) added 11 points and 6 rebounds and sophomore Kenny Gaskins III (Bronx, NY) finished with a season high 9 assists, 5 points, 5 rebounds and 4 steals. Juniors Alban Shala (Yorktown Heights, NY) and Dan Cunningham (Kingston, NY) each chipped in 7 points and 2 rebounds.

For Bridgeport, Teairez Stennis scored 14 points on 7-10 (70%) shooting and pulled down 6 rebounds. Mantas Armonas added 12 points and 2 rebounds MArquis Moore finished with 7 points and 3 assists. Lex James led the Purple Knights on the glass with 7 rebounds and had a team high 3 blocks.

The Clippers jumped out to an early 9-4 lead, with Young scoring on a couple of driving baskets. Concordia would increase the lead to 21-11 with 08:38 left in the first half. From there, the Clipper defense held the Purple Knight offense to 1 basket over the last 8 minutes of the first half. Concordia outscored Bridgeport 12-6 and took a 33-17 lead into the locker room at the half. The Clippers defense held Bridgeport to 19% (6-31) shooting from the floor in the first half, which is the lowest any opponent has shot against Concordia in the first half all season.

In the second half, both teams would trade baskets to keep the Clipper lead in double digits. A 3-point play by Cunnimgham gave Concordia a 42-28 lead. Bridgeport would score the next 9 points to cut their deficit to 42-37 with 12:49 left in the game. The Clippers would take control of the game, as Fields scored 5 of his 9 second half points in an 11-4 scoring run to give Concordia a 53-41 lead with just over 5 minutes remaining. The Clippers shot 6-9 (67%) from the free throw line over the last 4 minutes to ice the game. The Clippers were 12-16 (75%) from the free throw line overall in the second half.

The win improves the Clippers record to 5-11 overall and 4-5 in the East Coast Conference. Bridgeport improves to 5-10 overall and 3-5 in the East Coast Conference.

Concordia will face off against the Knights of Queens College on Saturday, January 19th in Flushing, NY. The game will begin at 7:30 PM.
