Clippers Survive Pioneers Comeback 84-81
Bronxville, NY - Junior Richard Fields (Bronx, NY) scored a game high 25 points, including 15 in the second half, as the Clippers held off a fiesty C.W. Post team 84-81 last night at the Meyer Athletic Center in Bronxville, NY. Fields also finished with 6 assists and 4 rebounds and shot 50% (8 for 16) from the floor. Senior Jonathan Duperon (Philadelphia, PA) scored 24 points on 9 for 13 shooting (69%) for the game. Fields and Duperon both combined to shoot 12 for 20 (60%) from 3-point range. Alphonso Duhart (Hillside, NJ) came off the bench to score 11 points, all in the second half.
The Clippers erased a 10 point halftime deficit and tied the game at 52-52 on a 3-pointer by Fields with 16:33 remaining. The lead would increase to 74-58 over the next 10 minutes with a barrage of 3-point baskets during that span by Fields (3), Duperon (1) and Duhart (1). The Pioneers fought back with a 17-6 scoring run, sparked by 6 points from George Skrelja, to cut the deficit to 80-75 with just over a minute to play. Junior Lamont Wilson (New York, NY) swished 2 free throws to give the Clippers an 82-75 lead. Raul Mercedes would then nail back-to-back 3-pointers for C.W. Post, cutting the Clipper lead to 1 point. The Pioneers missed a chance to take the lead on a shot by Kenny Burkes. Wilson grabbed the rebound, one of his 11 for the game, and was immediately fould with1.8 seconds remaining. Wilson stepped to the free throw line and calmy made both attempts, putting Concordia ahead 84-81. The Pioneers heaved a desperation attempt at the final buzzard that caught only air as the fans stormed the court in celebration.
For C.W. Post, John Morris finished with 17 points and 4 rebounds. Maurice Whitehurst compiled a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Mercedes added 15 points and 4 rebounds Skrelja and Brandon Buter each chipped in 8 points.
The win keeps the Clippers in the playoff hunt and improves the Clippers record to 8-13 overall and 7-8 in the East Coast Conference. The Pioneers fall to 13-8 overall and 9-6 in the East Coast Conference.
Concordia will look for back-to-back wins on Saturday, February 10th, as they host the Bears of the New York Institute of Technology. Earlier this season, the Bears topped Concordia 91-76 in Old Westbury, NY. In that contest, freshman Kenny Gaskins III (Bronx, NY) scored a season high 34 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. Fields added 17 points for the Clippers. Bryant Lassiter finished with 22 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals for NYIT. Daniel Cox and Phillip Jones each added 17 points for the Bears. The action will begin at 3:00 PM.
