Clippers Hold Off Flyers 58-54

Final Stats

Bronxville, NY - Junior Richard Fields (Bronx, NY) scored a game high 23 points and pulled down 6 rebounds to help the Clippers edge the Mercy College Flyers 58-54 yesterday at the Meyer Athletic Center in Bronxville, NY. Sharp shooting forward Jonathan Duperon (Philadelphia, PA) added 16 points. Duperon, who was 7 for 13 (54%) from the floor, leads the Clippers in field goal percentage at 48% and is third in the ECC in 3-point field goal percentage (43%). Lamont Wilson (New York, NY) continues to be a rebounding force for the Clippers, as the junior pulled down a game high 11 rebounds.

The Clippers trailed 11-8 midway through the first half. A 3-point basket by senior guard Nate Jean-Baptiste (Far Rockaway, NY) tied the game at 11-11, as that would be the last deficit the Clippers would have during the game. Jean-Baptiste's shot sparked a 21-6 scoring run to give the Clippers a 29-17 halftime lead.

In the second half, Concordia would maintain their double-digit lead through the first 10 minutes of action. With Concordia leading 41-31, the Flyers used a 13-4 scoring run to cut the deficit to 1 point with just under 6 minutes remaining. The Clippers would respond with Fields nailing a 3-pointer to push the lead to 48-44. Both teams would trade baskets over the next several minutes. In the end, the Clippers would sink their free throws and get crucial baskets from Fields and Duperon to ice the game.

The win improves the Clippers record to 7-12 overall and 6-7 in the East Coast Conference. Mercy College falls to 5-15 overall and 4-9 in the East Coast Conference.

Currently, the Clippers are sitting in a 3-way tie for 6th place in the East Coast Conference standings with St. Thomas Aquinas College and Molloy College. The Clippers split the regular season meeting with the Spartans, with the road team prevailing in each game, and defeated Molloy College  in a thrilling 71-68 victory last month.

Concordia will return to the court on Tuesday, February 6th, as they will take on the Golden Lions of Dowling College in Oakdale, NY. The last time these two teams squared off, the Clippers defeated Dowling 58-44 on December 15th at the Meyer Athletic Center. Fields finished with a game high 19 points in that contest. The action will begin at 7:00 PM.
