Philadelphia, Pa. - The Concordia College baseball team was back in action against the University of the Sciences on Sunday afternoon to conclude their weekend with a non-conference doubleheader at Richie Ashburn Field. The Clippers would split the games against the Devils as USciences secured a 4-3 win in game one while Concordia bounced back with a 10-3 victory in the night cap.
In game one the Devils would get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning and then the Clippers responded with a lone run in the top of the fourth. Junior Mike Manganiello's (Levittown, N.Y.) sacrifice fly would allow junior Erik Poldroo (New York, N.Y.) to score from third base.
Concordia would score the go-ahead run in the top of the fifth after a single by sophomore Vincent Capone-Froio (Yonkers, N.Y.) brought in freshman Randy Torres (Bronx, N.Y.) on the play. USciences responded in the home half of the inning with three runs to take a 4-2 advantage.
In the last at-bats for the Clippers, Concordia would have the bases loaded with two outs. A passed ball after a strike out would allow senior Raul Gonzalez (Brooklyn, N.Y.) to advance home as the Clippers only trailed by a run. Concordia was unable to score the game-tying run as the Devils held on for the 4-3 win.
Senior Ian Cole (Cortland Manor, N.Y.) started the game for the Clippers and pitched 4.0 innings allowing one run on three hits while striking out one batter. Junior Jake Matranga (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) was tagged with the loss for Concordia after he pitched 2.0 innings of relief and allowed three runs on three hits while striking out one batter.
Game two saw the Clippers score four runs in the top of the second inning to take and early advantage. Sophomore Brian Bilello (Lynbrook, N.Y.) recorded two RBI's in the inning while Capone-Froio and freshman Jason Reyes (Bronx, N.Y.) added a RBI each.
USciences recorded two runs in the home half of the third inning to cut their deficit in half as Concordia would respond in the top of the fourth with a lone run courtesy of a sacrifice fly by Capone-Froio. The Devils final run of the game would occur in the bottom of the fourth as the Clippers ended the game with five unanswered runs.
Three runs in the fifth off a two RBI double by senior Joe Gallub (Oceanside, N.Y.) and a sacrifice fly by sophomore Giorgio Palmiero (Carmel, N.Y.) would give Concordia an 8-3 lead. The Clippers' final two runs occurred in the top of the sixth as a bases loaded two RBI double by senior Nuri Gunes (Sussex, N.J.) gave Concordia two more insurance runs and a 10-3 victory.
Sophomore Mike Barone (New Rochelle, N.Y.) picked up the win for the Clippers after pitching 4.0 innings and allowed three runs on five hits while striking out two batters. Freshman Doug Elser (Hopewell Jct., N.Y.) came in to close out the last 3.0 innings for the save as he faced 10 batters and allowed no hits or runs while striking out a career-best four batters in his appearance.
Concordia (6-13, 2-6 CACC) will be on the road this Tuesday for a non-conference game against LIU Post.
