Clippers split with Pioneers on Damien Myers Day
The Clippers hosted the L.I.U. C.W. Post Pioneers on Sunday in a
non-conference double
header as the Clippers celebrated former player Damien Myers.
Before the games started the Clippers athletic department brought back a former player, Damien Myers. The department honored Myers as they reitred his Clippers number 8 jersey.
Myers, a four year member of the Clippers baseball team, he led the country in Division II in victories with 14 and he was also 4th in the country in earned runned averages with a 1.43 ERA in 2002. Myers was drafted in 2002 by the Detroit Tigers and played six years of minor league ball in the Tigers organization. Currently Myers still is in the NCAA Division II record books as he is 7th in career victories with 40 wins.
With the festivities going off of the field the games were underway. The Clippers handed the ball for the first game to Senior Tommy Paradise.
The Pioneers got on the board first in the first inning with one run. With the Clippers struggling in the bottom half of the inning their first hit of the game would not come until the second inning. Greg Conway hit a ball that sailed over the left center field fence and the Clippers tied the game up with is solo home run, Conway's third of the season.
Paradise continued to pitch well as the Pioneers were threatening in every inning. In the top of the fourth the Pioneers tacked on two more runs and added another in the sixth.
With the Clippers continued struggles at the plate it was few and
far between for offensive strides. Difre Reyes got aboard in
the bottom of the fifth inning after an error by the first
baseman. Reyes then stole second and was then driven home by
a single to right field by Anthony Carnacchio. With only one
run to score the Clippers were then halted by the Pioneers as the
Clippers dropped the first game 4-2.
Keith Malanga took to the mound for game two and despite having two runners on base in the first inning Malanga and the defense halted them with an inning ending double play. Malanga then hit his stride and pitched with little trouble.
The Clippers got on the board in the bottom of the sec
ond after David Perlleshi hit a ball over the left center field
fence for his first home run of the season for the Clippers to go
ahead 1-0. The Clippers found a few more hits throughout the
game and got closer to scoring but the Pioneers stopped them from
moving any farther ahead.
Malanga finished his game completely in seven innings as he struck out four.
Greg Conway led the Clippers with hits as he went 3 for 5 with 1 run scored and 1 RBI on the day.
The Clippers will host Southern Connecticut State University in a single game on Monday.
