Baseball Falls to Dowling in ECC Playoffs

Brookhaven, NY - The Concordia College baseball team was defeated by the Golden Lions of Dowling College 5-2 yesterday afternoon in the first round of the 2009 East Coast Conference Baseball Tournament at Golden Lions Field in Brookhaven, NY.

The Golden Lions took a 1-0 lead in the 5th inning when Erik Cabrera tripled to left center field with a runner on third base. Eddie Squeri then singled through the left side of the Clipper infield to put Dowling up 2-0.

In the 6th inning, junior Anthony Carnacchio (Rockaway, NY) ripped a single down the left field line to drive home senior Matt Shelley (Floral Park, NY) from second base and cut the deficit to 2-1.

In the bottom of the 6th inning, the Golden Lions added a run on Matthew Monastero's RBI double down the right field line to put Dowling up 3-1.

The Clippers responded in the 7th inning as sophomore Kenny Espinal (Bronx, NY) smacked a single to left field with a runner on second base to again cut the deficit to just one run.

The Golden Lions would put the Clippers away in the 9th inning as David Wendt hit a lead-off home run and Monastero hit another RBI double to make the final score 5-2.

Junior Tommy Paradise (Mahopac, NY) pitched 7.1 innings for the Clippers and allowed 10 hits and 4 earned runs. Paradise finished with 6 strikeouts. Gabriel Duran pitched a complete game for the Golden Lions and allowed 8 hits and totaled 9 strikeouts.

The Clippers finish the 2009 season with an overall record of 23-23-1 and 14-10 in the East Coast Conference.
