Baseball Tops Adelphi 4-2, Falls 5-0 in Twin Bill
Bronxville, NY - Senior Robert Gorvetzian (Jackson Heights, NY) pitched 7 innings in the first game of a doubleheader as the Clippers split with the Panthers of Adelphi University 4-2 and 5-0 today at Clipper Baseball Field in Bronxville, NY. Gorvetzian finished with 5 strikeouts and allowed 5 hits and 2 earned runs in the win, improving to 3-2 on the season.
In the first game, Concordia posted two runs in the 1st inning on an error by the Adelphi pitcher that scored sophomore Kenny Espinal (Bronx, NY) from third base and an RBI by junior Greg Conway (Floral Park, NY).
In the 2nd inning, the Clippers got back-to-back walks from sophomore Billy O'Connell (Dobbs Ferry, NY) and senior Matthew Shelley (Floral Park, NY). Sophomore Donny Madera (Pleasantville, NY) bunted to advance the runners ahead a base. The next batter up for the Clippers, Esinal, would hit a long sac fly to center field to score O'Connell from third base and put Concordia ahead 3-0.
In the 4th inning, Matthew Kenney hit a lead-off single to right field and Bill Melillo drew a walk to put runners on first and second base. Later in the inning, Chris Weidlein crushed a double to left field, driving in 2 runs to cut the Panther deficit to 3-2.
The Clippers added an insurance run in the 7th inning when Espinal scored the 4th run for Concordia on an error by the Adelphi third baseman.
Sophomore Peter Denyssenko (Larchmont, NY) pitched the final 2 innings in relief for the Clippers, allowing only 1 hit and striking out 3 batters in picking-up the save. Mike Bartlett gets the loss for the Panthers, lasting 7 innings and giving up 4 hits and an earned run with 6 strikeouts.
In game two, Conway and sophomore Mike Sciacchitano (Wappinger, NY) each collected 2 hits and freshman Vincent Ferraro (Mt. Kisco, NY) also had a hit for Concordia.
Senior Jose Aquino (Bronx, NY) pitched 5 innings for the Clippers and gave up 3 hits and 3 earned runs. Aquino falls to 3-3 on the year.
For Adelphi, Lucas Romeo had a hit and 2 RBI, while Robert Paccione finished with 2 hits and an RBI. Robert Nixon pitched a complete 7-inning game for the Panthers, allowing only 5 hits and striking out 8 Concordia batters.
The Clippers move to 15-16-1 on the season and 7-4 in the East Coast Conference. The Panthers record now stands at 16-6 overall and 8-1 in conference play.
The Clippers will host the Golden Lions of Dowling College on Tuesday, April 7th at Clipper Baseball Field. The action begins at 3:30 PM.
