Vaskas' RBI Single in the 10th Lifts Clippers over Pioneers
Brookville, NY - Sophomore Joe Vaskas (Bethpage, NY) hit a 2-out single up the middle in the top of the 10th inning to help the Clippers defeat the Pioneers of C.W. Post 4-3 in the first game of a doubleheader this afternoon in Brookville, NY. The Clippers also took the second game by a score of 9-6.
Concordia took the early lead in the first game, as junior Donnie Roth (Congers, NY) singled to left field in the 3rd inning with senior Matt Shelley (Floral Park, NY) on third base to put Concordia up 1-0. Roth successfully stole his ECC leading 21st base of the season and was driven home when sophomore Kenny Espinal (Bronx, NY) singled to left field to increase the lead to 2-0.
In the 5th inning, the Pioneers cut the Clipper lead in half on three consecutive singles to drive in a run and make it a 2-1 ballgame. A Jordan Stevens triple with a runner on first base tied the game at 2-2 in the 7th inning.
Sophomore Donny Madera (Pleasantville, NY) led off the 8th inning with a single to center field and stole second base. Three batters later, sophomore Mike Sciacchitano (Wappinger, NY) crushed a single to center field to send Madera home and put the Clippers ahead 3-2.
The Pioneers would tie the game in the bottom of the 9th inning when Kyle Walker hit a 2-out single with runners on first and second to tie the game at 3-3 and force extra innings.
In the 10th inning, Madera led off with a single and advanced to second base ona Roth sac bunt. Madera would take third base on a passed ball before being driven home by Vaskas' game winning RBI.
Junior Tommy Paradise (Mahopac, NY) pitched 9 innings and finished with 7 strikeouts and 9 hits allowed. Paradise improves to 3-6 on the season. Sophomore Peter Denyssenko (Larchmont, NY) picked up his 4th save of the season by pitching the 10th inning and sending the Pioneers down in order.
In the second game, with the score tied 3-3, the Clippers used a 6-run 4th inning to put away the Pioneers. Espinal hit a 2 RBI triple to right center field. Espinal finished with 2 hits and Roth collected 3 hits and an RBI. Vaskas continued his hot bat with a hit and 2 RBI.
The Clippers out hit the Pioneers 15-6 in the 7-inning contest.
Senior Jose Aquino (Bronx, NY) picks up the win for the Clippers and improves to 6-3 on the season. Junior Jesse Horsham (Port Jervis, NY) gets his first save of the year, pitching the final 2 innings and allowing only 1 hit.
The Clippers improve to 21-19-1 on the season and 12-7 in the East Coast Conference. The Pioneers fall to 12-26 overall and 9-8 in the East Coast Conference.
These two teams will play the third and final game of the series on Sunday, April 26th at Clipper Baseball Field. First pitch is set for 12:00 PM.
