Clippers Shut Out Dowling 1-0
Brookhaven, NY - The Concordia College baseball team defeated the Golden Lions of Dowling College 1-0 yesterday afternoon in an East Coast Conference match-up at Golden Lions Field in Brookhaven, NY.
The lone run of the game occurred in the 6th inning. Sophomore Billy O'Connell (Dobbs Ferry, NY) led off the inning with a single and advanced to second base on an error by the Dowling first baseman. Senior Matthew Shelley (Floral Park, NY) bunted his way on board and moved O'Connell to third base. The next batter to the plate for the Clippers, sophomore Kenny Espinal (Bronx, NY), reached base on the second Golden Lion error of the inning. O'Connell scored on the play from third base to give the Clippers the 1-0 lead.
Sophomore Peter Denyssenko (Larchmont, NY) pitched 6 innings for the Clippers and allowed only 4 hits and struck out 3 batters. Denyssenko improves to 4-0 on the year. Junior Tommy Paradise (Mahopac, NY) pitched the final 3 innings and gave up just 1 hit and struck out 2 batters in picking up the save.
For Dowling, Eddie Squeri collected with 2 hits, while Brian Ferguson, Colin Barnathan and Ralph Tufano each finished with 1 hit. Kevin McCormack pitched the full 9 innings for the Golden Lions, allowing 4 hits and striking out 12 Clipper batters.
Concordia has won 4 consecutive games and improves to 14-14-1 overall and 6-2 in the East Coast Conference. Dowling drops to 12-8 on the season and an even 4-4 in ECC contests.
The Clippers will return home to Clipper Baseball Field on Saturday, April 4th to host the Panthers of Adelphi University in an ECC doubleheader. Game one is set to start at 12:00 PM.
