Clippers Fend off Purple Knights
Bridgeport, CT - Sophomore Peter Denyssenko (Larchmont, NY) held the Purple Knights of the University of Bridgeport to just 5 hits in 9 innings on the mound in a 2-1 win for the Clippers yesterday afternoon in Bridgeport, CT. Denyssenko improves to 5-0 on the season and is tied for second with the most wins in the ECC.
The Clippers opened the 2nd inning with a double to left center field by junior Greg Conway (Floral Park, NY). Sophomore Mike Sciacchitano (Wappinger, NY) then drove in Conway with a triple to center field. Concordia went up 2-0 when junior Tommy Paradise (Mahopac, NY) reached on a fielder's choice to score Sciacchitano from third base.
In the 7th inning, Peter Barrows hit a 1-out double to left center field. Two batters later, Mike Ferrara singled to right center field for Bridgeport's only run of the game.
The Purple Knights posted runners on first base and second base in the 8th inning with no out. But the sophomore pitcher ended the threat with a strikeout and an inning ending double play.
In the 9th inning, Denyssenko would put the tying runner on first base, as Barrows singled to left field with 1 out. However, the sophomore pitcher again ended the Purple Knight scoring possibility by getting Greg Marks to fly out to center field and fittingly enough, striking out Ferrara to end the game.
The Clippers improve to 18-17-1 overall and 9-5 in the East Coast Conference. The University of Bridgeport falls to 8-12 on the year and 6-8 in ECC play.
Concordia will travel to Rockville Centre, NY on Saturday, April 18th to face the Lions of Molloy College in an ECC doubleheader. Game one will commence at 12:00 PM.
