Aquino Pitches Complete Game in Split with Mavericks

Bronxville, NY - Senior Jose Aquino (Bronx, NY) pitched a complete game two as the Clippers split a doubleheader with the Mavericks of Mercy College today at Clipper Baseball Field in Bronxville, NY. The Clippers earned the split with a 3-1 victory in the second game after falling in game one by a score of 5-1.

Aquino allowed only 4 hits in the 7-inning contest and struck out 9 Maverick batters. Aquino improves to 3-2 on the year.

The Mavericks struck first in the 3rd inning, as Michael Ferrante singled to right field to score Marc Dern from third base.

In the 4th inning, the Clippers loaded the bases for senior Michael Pompa (Carmel, NY), who drove home junior Greg Conway (Floral Park, NY). Sophomore Billy O'Connell (Dobbs Ferry, NY) reached third on the play and scored the second run for the Clippers on a throwing error by the Maverick's second baseman.

Concordia would add another run in the 6th inning as Pompa ripped a single to left field with Conway on second base for his second RBI of the game and put Concordia ahead 3-1.

In the first game, Chris Pannullo led off the 7th inning with a double to right centerfield. The next batter up for the Mavericks, Michael Grassano, singled down the left field line to drive home Pannullo and put the Mavericks ahead 1-0.

In the 8th inning, sophomore Kenny Espinal (Bronx, NY) scored on a Donnie Roth (Congers, NY) at bat to tie the game at 1-1.

In the 9th inning, Grassano crushed a 1-out home run to left field to put Mercy ahead for good at 2-1. Ken Mundy drove home a runner on third base. Two batters later, Ferrante hit an RBI single to center field to put Mercy ahead 4-1. The final run came with the next batter, as Graig Lauricella singled to center field to score Charles Dehart from third base.

Junior Tommy Paradise (Mahopac, NY) pitched 8.1 innings and allowed 8 hits and 3 earned runs with 5 strikeouts in picking up the loss. Paradise falls to 2-3 on the season.

Concordia record now stands at 11-14-1 overall and 4-2 in the East Coast Conference. The Mavericks move to 6-5 on the year and 1-1 in ECC play.

The Clippers and Mavericks will battle in the third and final game of the series on Sunday, March 29th in Dobbs ferry, NY. The game will start at 12:00 PM.
