Bucs Sweep Clippers
Miami Shores, FL - The Concordia College baseball team began their 11-game, 9-day road trip to Florida with a 16-4 loss to the Bucs of Barry University on Saturday and a 16-6 loss on Sunday at Feinbloom Field in Miami Shores, FL. The Clippers fall to 0-5 on the season, while the Bucs improve to 11-2 overall.
In Saturday's contest, sophomore Mike Sciacchitano (Wappinger, NY) put the Clippers ahead 1-0 with a 2-out home run to left field. However, the Clippers quickly fell behind in the bottom half of the 1st inning, as the Bucs secured 6 runs to take a 6-1 lead.
In the 6th inning, with the Clippers down 10-1, back-to-back doubles by junior Anthony Carnacchio (Rockaway, NY) and junior Greg Conway (Floral Park, NY) put a run on the board for the Clippers and sophomore Joe Vaskas (Bethpage, NY) singled to left field to cut the deficit to 10-3. The Bucs answered with a run in the bottom of the 6th when Yas Gutierrez singled home a runner on third base to increase the lead to 11-3.
In the 8th inning, junior Difre Reyes (Manhattan, NY) singled to right field, scoring Sciacchitano from second base for the final Clipper run of the game.
Senior Matt Featherstone (Bronx, NY) pitched 4 innings for the Clippers, giving up 5 hits and 9 earned runs. Featherstone also struck out 3 batters. Bobby Hernandez picked up the win for Barry by lasting 5 innings and allowing only 4 hits and 1 earned run, while striking out 6 Clipper batters.
In Sunday's contest, the Bucs again posted 6 runs in the 1st inning and would add 3 more runs in the 2nd inning to lead 9-0.
In the 4th inning, Reyes blasted a 2-run home run to right field and senior Matt Shelley (Floral Park, NY) hit his first home run of the year to cut the deficit to 9-3.
In the 5th inning, Sciacchitano doubled to center field and Conway followed with a 2-run home run to left field to make the score 10-5. The Bucs would rally for 4 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning on 2 sacrifice flies and a double by Danny Lima to increase the Bucs lead to 14-5.
Yudelmis Hernandez blasted a 2-run home run in the 8th inning to increase the Barry lead to 16-5. In the 9th inning, Carnacchio doubled through the right side of the Barry infield to score Shelley from second base to give the Clippers their final run of the game. Junior Jesse Horsham (Port Jervis, NY) pitched 4 innings for the Clippers with 7 hits allowed and 10 earned runs. Charley Short gets the win for Barry in 4 innings of action with 7 hits and 3 earned runs. Short also struck out 6 batters.
The Clippers will continue action in the Palm Beach Challenge at the Santaluces Sports Complex in Palm Beach, FL. The Clippers will take on CACC member Wilmington University in doubleheader action beginning at 12:00 PM.
