Clippers Fall in Finale 19-6
Wingate, NC - The Concordia College baseball team was defeated in the final game of a 3-game series against the Bulldogs of Wingate University 19-6 yesterday at Ron Christopher Stadium in Wingate, NC. The Bulldogs pounded out 55 runs and 58 hits in the 3-game series, as the Clippers scored 28 runs and had 31 hits for the weekend.
Sophomore Mike Sciacchitano (Wappinger, NY) and junior Donnie Roth (Congers, NY) each finished with 2 RBI and junior Difre Reyes (Manhattan, NY) collected 2 hits.
The Bulldogs scored 3 runs in the 3rd inning as Jacob Karr hit a double to center field, scoring runners on first and second base, Karr would later score on a wild pitch from senior Jose Aquino (Bronx, NY).
In the 5th inning, the Clippers got on the board with an RBI from sophomore Donny Madera (Pleasantville, NY) to cut the deficit to 3-1. Roth stepped to the plate and delivered a 1-out single to right centerfield that scored 2 runs to tie the game at 3-3. Junior Anthony Carnacchio (Rockaway, NY) drove in the 4th Clipper run of the inning and Sciacchitano homered to left field with a runner on base to increase the Clipper lead to 6-3.
In the bottom half of the 5th inning, Karr scored from third base on another wild pitch. Joshua Karr would double to left center to score 2 runs and Dodson McPherson singled to right center. Wingate would get their sixth and final run of the inning as Casey Allison grounded out to the shortstop, advancing McPherson from third base to make the score 9-6 in favor of Wingate.
In the 7th inning, Wingate would add 6 more runs as Heath Weatherford drove in 2 runs and Mark Letchworth also drove in a run, putting the Bulldogs comfortably ahead 15-6. The Bulldogs posted 4 more runs in the 8th inning to make the final score 19-6.
Aquino picks-up the loss for Concordia, pitching 4 innings and giving up 7 hits and 8 earned runs. Aquino also struck out 5 Bulldog batters. Tyler Almond gets the win for Wingate in 7 innings of work with 10 strikeouts and 2 earned runs.
The loss drops the Clippers record to 0-3 on the season, while the Bulldogs improve to 8-7 overall.
The Clippers will return to action on Saturday, February 28th, as they travel to Miami Shores, FL to take on the Bucs of Barry University. First pitch is slated for 6:00 PM.
