Baseball Retires Aviles' Jersey
Bronxville, NY - The Concordia College baseball team paid tribute to former Clipper standout Mike Aviles by retiring his No. 13 jersey during the Clippers Alumni Game this past Saturday at Clipper Baseball Field in Bronxville, NY. Over 30 former Clipper baseball players came back to participate in the event and played the current Concordia College baseball players on Homecoming afternoon.
Aviles, now a shortstop for the Kansas City Royals of Major League Baseball, had a stellar career for the Clippers. In his senior year, Aviles was ranked No. 1 in the nation in batting average (0.500), home runs per game (0.49), slugging percentage (1.016) and runs per game (1.84). Aviles led Concordia to a 27-17-1 record during that campaign.
For the Royals, Aviles appeared in 102 games and hit .325 with 10 home runs after being called up from the Class AA Omaha Royals. Aviles finished the season with 136 hits, 27 of which were doubles and had 51 RBI. The shortstop had a slugging percentage of .480 and an on base percentage of .354.
