Clippers Close Season With a 7-6 Win
Bronxville, NY - Sophomore T.J. Walsh (Eastchester, NY) batted 3-4, including a solo home run and two doubles, to help the Clippers defeat the Mavericks of Mercy College 7-6 in 12-innings yesterday at Clipper Baseball Field in Bronxville, NY.
Walsh hit his second home run of the season in the 2nd inning to put the Clippers ahead 1-0. Concordia would add two runs in the 3rd inning on a sac fly by senior Peter Dempsey (Brewster, NY) and a Tom Bordanaro (Wappingers Falls, NY) triple to left center field, giving the Clippers a 3-0 advantage.
The Mavericks would answer in the 4th inning, as Steve Summer hit a 3-run home run to left center field to tie the game at 3-3.
Mercy would claim the lead in the 6th inning with a sac fly from Craig Ross that scored Chris Pannullo from third base. The lead would not last long as Concordia would load the bases in the bottom half of the inning. Junior Matt Shelly (Floral Park, NY) ripped a 2 RBI single up the middle to give Concordia a 5-4 lead. Dempsey would then step-up to the plate and drive in another run to put the Clippers up 6-4.
In the 8th inning, Ross blasted a solo home run to cut the deficit to 6-5 and would tie the game in the 9th inning on a 1-out single from Justin Muscarella that scored a runner on second base.
The action continued all the way to the 12th inning where Anthony Fratto (Newburgh, NY) hit a 1-out single to right center field. Walsh and freshman Kenny Espinal (Bronx, NY) drew consecutive walks to load the bases with still only 1 out. The next batter, sophomore Donnie Roth (Congers, NY), also walked to bring home the decisive run for the Clippers.
Sophomore Tommy Paradise (Mahopac, NY) picked-up the win for Concordia in relief, lasting 6 innings and allowing 3 hits and 2 earned runs with 3 strikeouts. Paradise improves to 2-6 on the season.
