Baseball Rally Falls Short Against STAC 5-4

Bronxville, NY - Senior Tom Bordanaro (Wappingers Falls, NY) finished with a hit and 2 RBI in a 5-4 loss to the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College yesterday at Clipper Baseball Field in Bronxville, NY. The Clippers fall to 10-26 overall and 5-15 in the East Coast Conference. St. Thomas Aquinas improves to 21-19 overall and 12-8 in the East Coast Conference.

The Spartans got on the scoreboard in the 1st inning as Fernando Peralta doubled to right field with runners on the corners to put St. Thomas ahead 1-0. Two batters later, Dan McDermott singled in another run and Kevin Connors hit a RBI, sac fly to left field to give the Spartans a 3-0 lead.

 

 

Concordia would answer in the bottom half of the inning, as senior Peter Dempsey (Brewster, NY) drove in a runner on third base. The next batter, freshman Joe Vaskas (Bethpage, NY) doubled to center field, scoring sophomore T.J. Walsh (Eastchester, NY) from third base to cut the Clipper deficit to 3-2.

In the 2nd inning, John Mazzello hit a double with a runner on second base to increase the lead to 4-2.

In the 5th inning, sophomore Anthony Carnacchio (Belle Harbor, NY) and Walsh each drew a walk. Bordanaro would then double to center field, driving home both runners and tying the game at 4-4.

The Spartans would again take the lead in the 7th inning on a single by McDermott with a runner on second base, putting St. Thomas ahead 5-4. That would prove to be the final run of the game, as Concordia could not get a runner past second base in the final three innings.

Junior Giuseppe Granitto (Bronx, NY) pitched the final 3 innings for Concordia, allowing only 2 hits and no earned runs with 6 strikeouts. Granitto falls to 3-6 on the season. Joel Violette threw 6.1 innings for the Spartans and gave up only 4 hits and 4 earned runs while striking out 7 batters.

Concordia will return to action on Saturday, April 26th at Clipper Baseball Field against the Golden Lions of Dowling College in an ECC doubleheader. Game one will begin at 12:00 PM.
