Bronxville, NY - The Panthers of Adelphi University swept a doubleheader from the Clippers by the scores of 4-2 and 11-2 yesterday at Clipper Baseball Field in Bronxville, NY.  The losses snap a 3-game winning streak for Concordia.

In game 1, Adelphi quickly jumped on top with a run in the 1st inning and 2 more runs in the 2nd inning.  The Clippers would answer in the 6th inning as Samuel Golubov (Cortlandt Manor, NY) led off with a walk. Senior Jason Lewandowski (Nesconset, NY) followed up with a double to center field, advancing Golubov to third base. Two batters later, junior Peter Dempsey (Brewster, NY) singled up the middle, driving in two runs for the Clippers to cut the deficit to 3-2.

In the 7th inning, Ralph Tropiano belted a lead-off double to left field and advanced to third base on a groundout back to the pitcher by Rob DeGennaro. The next batter, Mike Testani, flyed out to left field, scoring Tropiano from third base to give the Panthers a 4-2 lead.

Concordia would threaten in the 9th inning. Freshman TJ Walsh (Bronxville, NY) led off with a single and advanced to second on a passed ball. Michael Pompa (Carmel, NY) advanced Walsh to third base with a groundout to the second baseman. Golubov then hit a long, high fly ball that was snatched by the left fielder for the second out. Panther pitcher Mike McLasky walked the next two Clipper batters to load the bases. Senior Kevin Hickey (New Fairfield, CT) then stepped up and crushed  ball to right center field, where Ralph Calca made a spectacular diving catch to end the game. Junior Giuseppe Granitto (Bronx, NY) pitched 6 innings for the Clippers, giving up 7 hits and 4 runs, while striking out 4 batters. Granitto's record falls to 1-2 on the season.

 

 

In game 2, the Adelphi bats came alive as the Panthers belted 5 home runs to coast to an 11-2 victory. Testani finished the game with 3 hits, including 2 home runs and 4 RBI. Tropiano and Bill Melillo also hit home runs for Adelphi. Tom Bordanaro (Wappingers Falls, NY) hit his team leading 4th home run this season, a solo shot to left field in the 2nd inning.

The Panthers broke the game open in the 4th inning. Leading 4-2, Tropiano smashed a 2-run home run to center field off Michael Quick (Port Jervis, NY). Testani followed up with the first of his two home runs to give the Panthers a 7-2 lead. Testani would bat again in the 5th inning and blast a 3-run home run, as Adelphi would add 4 more runs in the inning to claim an 11-2 lead. Quick picks up the loss for Concordia, as the senior's record falls to 2-2 on the season.

The losses drop the Clippers record to 7-12 overall and 3-5 in the East Coast Conference. Adelphi improves to 15-9 overall and 8-2 in the East Coast Conference.

Concordia will finish the 3-game series with the Panthers on Monday, April 9th, traveling to Garden City, NY for a 3:30 PM contest.
