Rally Falls Short Against Felician 8-6

Final Stats

Bronxville, NY - The Concordia College baseball team rallied for 5 runs in the final two innings, but it wasn't enough as the Golden Falcons escaped with an 8-6 victory at Clipper Baseball Field in Bronxville, NY.

The Golden Falcons got a lead-off home run by Chris Flynn in the 2nd inning to put Felician up 1-0. Concordia answered in the 4th inning, as senior Michael Gagliardi (Cortlandt Manor, NY) doubled to left field and advanced to third on a passed ball. Junior Jake Irwin (Cornwall, NY) singled up the middle, scoring Gagliardi to tie the game at 1-1.

In the 6th inning, Flynn would again hit a lead-off home run, this time to center field, to put Felician up 2-1. Two batters later, David Schoer  doubled down the left field line and would take third base on a single by Anthony Spina. The next two batters would each hit an RBI single to increase the Golden Falcon lead to 4-1.

In the 8th inning, Spina drew a lead-off walk and took second base on a single by Kenny Vanderhee. Frank Quintana stepped up and singled to left field, scoring Spina from second base. With runners on first and second base, Ray Rose homered to left field to increase the lead to 8-1.

 

 

The bottom half of the 8th saw the Clippers fight back with 3 runs. With runners on first and second base, Gagliardi singled through the left side of the infield, scoring Donnie Roth (Congers, NY) from second base. Two batters later, Irwin would groundout to the second baseman, scoring a run. Harold Mejia (Miami, FL) singled to right center field to cut the Clipper deficit to 8-4.

In the 9th inning, Concordia would manage to load the bases with no outs. Senior Kevin Hickey (New Fairfield, CT) singled to right field to score one run. Matt Shelly (Floral Park, NY) was called out on the play at home, trying to score from second base. Gagliardi then reached on a fielder's choice, scoring one run, as Felician got the force out at second base.  Scott VanEs got the final out of the game to end the Clipper rally and win the game for Felician.

Sophomore Jose Aquino (Bronx, NY) pitched 6 innings for Concordia, giving up 11 hits and 4 earned runs. Aquino struck out four Felician batters in taking the loss for Concordia, as his record falls to 1-3 on the season.

The loss drops the Clippers record to 13-18 on the year. The Golden Falcons improve to 17-21 overall.

Concordia will get back into ECC play on Wednesday, April 25th, as they travel to Flushing, NY to play the Knights of Queens College. It will be a single game and will begin at 3:30 PM.
