Concordia Completes Sweep of Flyers With 4-3 Win
Dobbs Ferry, NY - Senior Kevin Hickey (New Fairfield, CT) blasted two home runs to lead the Clippers past the Flyers of Mercy College 4-3 this afternoon at the Mercy Baseball Field in Dobbs Ferry, NY. Hickey finished the game with 3 hits, 2 RBI and scored 3 runs.
Trailing 2-1 in the 5th inning, Hickey belted the first of his two home runs, a lead-off shot to tie the game at 2-2. Hickey would duplicate that feat in the 7th inning, as the senior hit his second homer to give Concordia a 3-2 lead.
The Flyers responded in the bottom half of the inning. Jonathan Cohen led the inning off with a double. The next batter, Ryan Johnson, singled, scoring Cohen from second base to tie the game at 3-3.
In the 8th inning, junior Peter Dempsey (Brewster, NY) hit a lead-off home run, his second homer of the season, to give the Clippers a 4-3 lead and margin of victory.
Senior Josh Likens (Owensboro, KY) pitched 8.2 innings, allowing 9 hits and 3 runs. Likens also struck out a season high 9 batters in picking up the win, improving his record to 3-2 on the season. Junior Zach Staniewicz (Verplanck, NY) came on in relief in the 9th with runners on first and second base and two outs and forced the Flyer batter to line out to third base to earn the save and end the game.
The Clippers swept all 3 games against the Flyers this season and improve their record to 11-16 overall and 6-9 in the East Coast Conference. Mercy College falls to 2-25 overall and 2-12 in the East Coast Conference.
Concordia will be back in action on Saturday, April 21st, as
they travel to Rockville Centre, NY to face the Lions of Molloy
College. The first game of the doubleheader will begin at 12:00 PM.
