Clippers Drop Two on Opening Day in Florida

Ft. Pierce, FL - The Concordia College baseball team opened their Spring Break Trip with a pair of 1-run losses at the Lawnwood Complex in Ft. Pierce, FL. Concordia was defeated by ECC foe New Haven 3-2 and finished the day with a 9-8 loss to Felician College in 11 innings.

Game 1 Recap

Evan Okon hit a 2-out single in the bottom of the 9th inning to give the University of New Haven Chargers a 3-2 victory over the Clippers. Freshman Anthony Fratto (Newburg, NY) had 2 hits and a RBI single in the 2nd inning, scoring senior Michael Gagliardi (Cortlandt Manor, NY), that gave Concordia a 1-0 lead.

New Haven would respond with 2 runs in the 3rd inning. A double by Okon scored Bryan Dick from 2nd base. Okon would later score on a RBI single from Michael Moras.

Fratto would lead off the 5th inning with a double. With 2 outs, senior Samuel Golubov (Cortlandt Manor, NY) singles in Fratto to tie the score at 2-2.

Junior Peter Dempsey (Brewster, NY) finished with 2 hits for the Clippers. On the mound, sophomore Robert Gorvetzian (Jackson Heights, NY) pitched 6 innings, giving up 6 hits and 2 earned runs. Gorvetzian also struck out 3 batters. Sophomore Jose Aquino (Bronx, NY) picks up the loss, allowing the winning run in the bottom of the 9th inning.

 

 

Game 2 Recap

Chris Flynn hit a bases loaded single through the right side of the infield in the 11th inning to give the Golden Falcons of felician College a 9-8 win over Concordia. Golubov and Gagliardi each finished with a hit and 2 RBI.

After falling behind 4-1, Concordia would come back to score 3 runs in the 4th inning and 4 runs in the 5th inning to take an 8-5 lead after 5 innings. Felician would add a run in the 6th and 2 more in the 9th to tie the score at 8-8.

Fratto and Anthony Carnacchio (Rockaway, NY) each had 2 hits and a RBI.Fratto also scored 2 runs. Greg Conway (Floral Park, NY) and Tom Bordanaro (Wappingers Falls, NY) each had a hit and scored a run. Senior Michael Quick (Port Jervis, NY) pitched 5 innings, giving up 6 hits and 5 earned runs. Quick also struck out 6 batters. Senior Josh Likens (Owensboro, KY) came on in relief, giving up 4 hits and 3 earned runs. Aquino picked up his 2nd loss on the day.

The Clippers fall to 0-2 on the season.

Concordia will resume play on Sunday, March 4th with 2 contests. First, the Clippers will face the Bulldogs of Bryant University at 9:00 AM and will conclude play for the day against the Timberwolves of Northwood University at 12:00 PM. Both games will be played at the Lawnwood Complex in Ft. Pierce, FL.
