Concordia Back on Track With Sweep of Flyers

Bronxville, NY - The Concordia College baseball team ended their 4 game losing streak with a pair of East Coast Conference wins over visiting Mercy College yesterday at Clipper Baseball Field in Bronxville, NY. Game scores were 14-8 and 6-0. The Clippers raise their record to 6-10 overall and 2-3 in the East Coast Conference. Mercy College falls to 1-17 overall and 1-5 in the East Coast Conference.

In game 1, the Clippers jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead with a RBI double to left field by Anthony Fratto (Newburgh, NY) and a 3-run home run by Tom Bordanaro (Wappingers Falls, NY). Concordia increased the lead with 2 more runs in the 3rd inning on a home run by Michael Gagliardi (Cortlandt Manor, NY) and 1 run in the 4th inning to take a 7-0 lead.

 

 

Mercy College got on the scoreboard in the 5th inning with two runs to cut the deficit to 7-2. In the bottom half of the 5th inning, Bordanaro and Gagliardi each connected on their second home run of the game, as Concordia scored 7 runs in the frame to go up 14-2. The Flyers would not go away quietly, as Roberto Martinez hit a solo home run in the 6th inning and a 2-run homer in the 7th inning. The Flyers would respond with 6 unanswered runs, but could not pull any closer as Matt Featherstone (Bronx, NY) would finish off the Flyers. Robert Gorvetzian (Jackson Heights, NY) picked up the win to improve to 2-0. The sophomore pitched 6.2 innings, allowing 7 hits and 7 runs, while striking out 3 Flyers.

In game 2, senior Michael Quick (Port Jervis, NY) pitched a complete game 4-hitter to improve to 2-1 on the season. Quick struck out 6 batters in the game. Concordia picked up 2 runs in the 2nd inning and 1 run in the 4th inning. Greg Conway (Floral Park, NY) smashed RBI singles in each inning. The freshman finished the game with 3 hits and 4 RBI. Jason Lewandowski (Nesconset, NY) and Michael Poma (Carmel, NY) each collected 2 hits and Bordanaro picked up 2 RBI.

Concordia will be back in action on Monday, April 2ns, as they host the Purple Knights of The University of Bridgeport. The Clippers lost a couple of 2-run games to Bridgeport last week, 4-2 and 5-3. The game will begin at 3:00 PM.
