Clippers Fall to Golden Lions 13-8

Final Stats

Holbrook, NY - The Dowling College baseball team pounded the Concordia College pitching for 20 hits en route to a 13-8 East Coast Conference win yesterday in Holbrook, NY. The 20 hits allowed is a season high, eclipsing the old mark of 15 set twice down in Florida over spring break.

The Clippers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 2nd inning off of a 2-out single to left field by freshman catcher TJ Walsh (Bronxville, NY) that scored Kevin Hickey (New Fairfield, CT) from third base and Donnie Roth (Congers, NY) from second base.

Dowling would respond in the 3rd inning with 4 runs. Kevin Reese and Chris Caputo each drove in runs with RBI singles. Reese would single again in the 4th inning to drive home another run, giving the Golden Lions a 5-2 lead.

Junior Peter Dempsey (Brewster, NY) led off the 6th inning with a double to center field. The next batter, Tom Bordanaro (Wappingers Falls, NY) drew a walk. Both Clippers would then advance as the next batter grouded out to first base.  Walsh then stepped up and drove in his third RBI on a single. Sophomore Michael Pompa (Carmel, NY) also singled in a run to cut the Clipper deficit to 5-4.

The bottom of the 6th inning would prove costly for the Clippers as Caputo would crush a 1-out, grand slam home. Two batters later, with a man on first base, Henry Fuentes also homered to give the Golden Lions a 11-4 lead.

Senior Michael Gagliardi (Cortlandt Manor, NY) led off the 7th inning with a walk. After a fly out to right field by Hickey, Dempsey nailed a 2-run home run to left field. The Clippers trailed 11-6 after 7 innings.

The 8th inning saw Dowling add two more runs on RBI singles. David Wendt singled to left field  with runners on the corners to score Casey Rafferty from third base. Two batters later, Reese would hit his third RBI of the game, a 2-out single up the middle to increase Dowling's lead to 13-6 after 8 innings.

In the 9th inning, with a runner on first base, Hickey drove in 2 runs on his first home run of the season, to cut the Golden Lion lead to 13-8. However, that would be all the runs the Clippers could amass as Dowling ended the game with a double play.

On the mound, senior Josh Likens (Owensboro, KY) pitched 5.1 innings and allowed 13 hits and 10 earned runs in picking up the loss. Likens falls to 1-1 on the season.

The loss drops the Clippers record to 4-9 overall and 0-3 in the East Coast Conference. The Golden Lions improve to 7-10 overall and 2-2 in the East Coast Conference.

The Clippers will try to end their 3-game losing streak on Friday, March 30th, as they step out of East Coast Conference action to face the Setters of Pace University in Pleasantville, NY. It will be a single game and will begin at 3:00 PM.
