2011-12 Concordia College Men’s Golf Season Wrap-up
Bronxville, NY– The men’s golf team at Concordia had another productive year in only their second year of varsity competition. The team participated in eight regular season events, the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship and two individuals participated in the NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Regional Tournament.
The Clippers began the season on Sept. 24 with the two-day Dowling September Shootout finishing in eighth out of the 18-team field. Junior Jeffrey Schaller (Kingston, NY) finished tied for the lead after 36 holes and went into a four-hole playoff to decide the overall winner. Schaller came up short as his opponent took the win.
A week later Concordia was back in action for another two-day tournament hosted by St. Thomas Aquinas College. The Clippers finished in 5th place as Schaller led the team with a pair of 78’s to finish tied for seventh in the field of 35 players.
Concordia would catch fire during their next three tournaments as the team won each of the one-day tournaments they played in. This included wins at two different courses in back-to-back days as this stretch ended the Clippers’ fall schedule.
The team participated in their first tournament of the spring on Mar. 24 with a two-day tournament hosted by St. Thomas Aquinas. Concordia finished with a ninth place performance and sophomore Sam Deitte (St. Louis, MO) led the Clippers with a team-best 2-over par as he finished tied for fifth in a field of over 70 players.
Concordia earned their fourth and final victory on March 26 with a win at the Philadelphia U. Invitational by knocking off the Rams and Chestnut Hill College. The Clippers would participate in the two-day Peter King Invitational on Mar. 31 and Apr. 1 to prepare for the CACC Championships. Concordia earned a top-10 finish in the 18-team field as they ended their regular season schedule with eight consecutive top-10 finishes.
Apr. 10 and 11 marked the dates for the CACC Championship at Whitemarsh Valley Country Club in Lafayette Hill, PA. The Clippers finished day one in third place just seven strokes off the lead as Schaller tied for the overall lead with a three-over par 75. Day two found Concordia unable to catch Wilmington (DE) as the Clippers ended the tournament in third place out of the 11 teams.
Deitte would be named to the All-CACC Team at the tournament while Schaller earned All-Tournament Team honors. Both players would be chosen to participate in the NCAA Regional Tournament in May to represent Concordia College. The three-day tournament took place at the Hershey Links Country Club in Hershey, PA. Schaller finished tied for 57th while Deitte tied for 71st overall in a field of 107 players. At the end of the season Deitte would be recognized on the CACC All-Academic Team for his hard work in the classroom and on the golf course.
