2007-2008 Athletics Awards Banquet
The 2007-2008 Concordia College Athletics Awards Banquet was held on the evening of Friday, April 25, 2008 in Schoenfeld Hall on the campus of Concordia College in Bronxville, NY. The yearly event is held in honor of the student-athletes to thank them for their commitment and hard work to Concordia College. The athletes are recognized team by team and their accomplishments are highlighted. In addition, eight awards are given to student-athletes who represent the highest standard in several areas. Awards are given to the Male and Female Freshman of the Year, the Male and Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year, the Christus Victor Award, the Director of Athletics Award, the Esther Petzke Rockhill Award in Women's Athletics and the Mickey Byrne Award in Men's Athletics.
Female Freshman of the Year
This award is given to the female freshman athlete that best exemplifies the characteristics of a student-athlete. This year's recipient is Jaime Lorenzo from the softball team. Lorenzo led the Clippers with a .403 batting average, which was the fifth best batting average in the East Coast Conference during the regular season. Lorenzo was second on the team in hits (29) and third on the team in RBI (11) and runs scored (14). Lorenzo also had a team high 55 assists from the shortstop position and has a fielding percentage of .955.
Male Freshman of the Year
This award is given to the male freshman athlete that best exemplifies the characteristics of a student-athlete. This year's recipient is William Eason of the men's basketball team. Eason averaged 6.5 points per game and 5.7 rebounds per game. The 5.7 rebounds per game ranks the freshman 11th in the East Coast Conference. Eason also finished the season with 1.34 blocks per game, which is tops in the East Coast Conference.
Female Scholar Athlete Award
This award is given to the senior female student-athlete with the highest overall GPA. This year's recipient is Amanda Westfall from the volleyball team. Westfall was second on the team in blocks, averaging 0.35 blocks per game. Westfall also finished the season with 232 digs and 14 service aces. The senior also had 137 kills on the season. Westfall was named to the East Coast Conference Fall Scholar Athletes Honor Roll and accumulated a 3.92 GPA.
Male Scholar Athlete Award
This award is given to the senior male student-athlete with the highest overall GPA. This year's recipient is Clint Providence from the men's soccer team. Providence tended goal in 10 games for the Clippers and has a 1.84 goals against average this season. The senior has tallied 46 saves during the year, for a .719 save percentage. Providence has accumulated a 3.87 GPA.
Christus Victor Award
This award is given to the student-athlete who best exemplifies the combination of being a student-athlete and contributor to the community. This year's recipient is Ashley Spose from the softball team. Spose was actively involved in the Concordia College Student Government throughout the year and was devoted several hours within the Concordia College Athletic Department in both a work study position and in a rental supervisory position. Spose batted .196 with 16 hits and 4 RBI and is second on the team with 6 doubles.
Director of Athletics Award
The Director of Athletics Award is a new award that will be given out annually to the student-athlete who best embodies the characteristics of hard work, sacrifice, dedication and a fighting Clipper spirit. This year recipient is Richard Fields of the men's basketball team. Fields led the Clippers to their second East Coast Conference semi-final appearance in the last three seasons. Fields averaged 18.7 points per game and 1.93 steals per game, fourth best and fifth best in the East Coast Conference, respectively. Fields scored his 1,000th career point this season in just two years with the Clippers. The senior was also named to the East Coast Conference Men's Basketball First Team All-Conference and to the 2007-2008 All-Met Division II Men's College Basketball First Team.
Esther Petzke Rockhill Award in Women's Athletics
This award is given to the female athlete who best exemplifies the characteristics of hard work, determination, excellence, and sportsmanship. This year's winner is Tiffany Edwards from the volleyball team. Edwards finished the year second on the team and tenth in the East Coast Conference in kills per game with 3.45 kills per game. Edwards also finished second on the team with 37 service aces on the year. The senior also was named to the East Coast Conference Volleyball Third Team.
Mickey Byrne Award in Men's Athletics
This award is given to the male athlete who best exemplifies the characteristics of hard work, determination, excellence, and sportsmanship. This year's recipient is Rodrigo Teixeira from the men's tennis team. Teixeira has helped the Clippers to a 14-2 regular season record and the East Coast Conference Men's Tennis Championship. The senior has led the Clippers to a National ranking of 12th in Division II. Teixeira has amassed an impressive 16-1 regular season record in singles competition and a 16-3 record in doubles play during the regular season.
